What you will learn
U stands for the upper face and D for the lower face. Face direction always follows the viewpoint of the named face.
Before you begin
Set a clear front and upper face on your physical puzzle. If you are using the simulator, choose the appropriate cube size, then hold the same orientation before comparing moves. Review face-turn notation whenever a move symbol is unfamiliar.
Find the pieces or pattern
U stands for the upper face and D for the lower face. Face direction always follows the viewpoint of the named face.
Try this short exercise
Practise U2, D2, U2, D2 and observe the pieces.
Check your result
Stop after the exercise and compare your real cube with the interactive 3D cube. Check neighboring face colors, not just the face closest to you. If the outcome differs, repeat slowly from a known position.
The lower face can be easiest to understand by looking from underneath.
Take the skill into your next solve
Apply this lesson during one deliberate practice solve. Describe what you see before moving, make only the move you intended, and check the result. Confidence with piece recognition and reliable turns matters more than repeating a long sequence quickly.
