Sledgehammer Algorithm: R’ F R F’

Understand a common four-move F2L trigger.

Open 3D cube ↗

What you will learn

The sledgehammer trigger is R’ F R F’. It appears in F2L variations and affects piece orientation differently from the right-hand trigger.

Before you begin

Set a clear front and upper face on your physical puzzle. If you are using the simulator, choose the appropriate cube size, then hold the same orientation before comparing moves. Review face-turn notation whenever a move symbol is unfamiliar.

01 · OBSERVE

Find the pieces or pattern

The sledgehammer trigger is R’ F R F’. It appears in F2L variations and affects piece orientation differently from the right-hand trigger.

02 · PRACTISE

Try this short exercise

Compare the two four-move triggers on a reset cube and inspect changed stickers.

03 · VERIFY

Check your result

Stop after the exercise and compare your real cube with the interactive 3D cube. Check neighboring face colors, not just the face closest to you. If the outcome differs, repeat slowly from a known position.

Common mistake to avoid

Its use depends on the current cube case; do not apply it blindly.

Take the skill into your next solve

Apply this lesson during one deliberate practice solve. Describe what you see before moving, make only the move you intended, and check the result. Confidence with piece recognition and reliable turns matters more than repeating a long sequence quickly.
