OLL Explained: Orient the Last Layer

Learn what OLL means, how two-look OLL works and when to practise full OLL cases.

OLL stands for Orientation of the Last Layer. In a CFOP solve, it means turning the top stickers upward without yet requiring every top-layer piece to be in the final position.

Follow the lesson

STEP 01

Finish F2L first

The first two layers must be complete before standard last-layer cases apply.

STEP 02

Use two-look OLL to begin

First orient the top-layer edges into a cross; then orient the four top-layer corners. This separates a hard goal into manageable parts.

STEP 03

Learn case recognition

Note the arrangement of top-color stickers on the upper face and around the sides. Similar-looking patterns can need different solutions.

STEP 04

Move to full OLL gradually

Advanced CFOP solvers eventually learn 57 OLL cases. Add them in small families after two-look OLL is comfortable.

Coach's note

You can practise orientation without scrambling the whole cube by applying an algorithm and then reversing it. Always verify that your starting case matches the lesson.

Practise it on a real cube

Keep your physical cube in the same orientation as the instructions. Perform each face turn slowly, stop and check the stickers, then compare with the 3D trainer. Voice lessons can guide screen-based practice; physical cube moves are confirmed by the learner rather than checked by a camera.

How to know you are ready to move on

Repeat the exercise from a fresh starting position and explain what each turn is meant to accomplish. If the result differs from the target, go back to the earliest step you can verify instead of immediately starting over. Use cube notation whenever a move symbol feels unclear.
